A horrific accident occurred at a political rally of Indian actor and politician Thalapati Vijay yesterday. The sky in the south is becoming heavy with news of one death after another. The death toll in a stampede at Vijay’s rally in Karur district of Tamil Nadu has reached 39. State Health Minister Maa Subrahmanyam said that 16 women and 6 children were among the dead in the rally.
At least 40 people were injured. President Draupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah have expressed grief over the death of a person who was trampled to death at a public meeting.
Meanwhile, Vijay announced financial assistance to the families of the victims of the tragic accident that took place at the public meeting. The actor said, “This is undoubtedly an irreparable loss for us.”
Vijay also said No matter how much consolation is offered, the pain of losing a loved one is unbearable. Still, as a family member, I am announcing a compensation of Tk 2 million to each family who lost a loved one and Tk 2 million to each of those who are injured and undergoing treatment. This amount of money is certainly insignificant compared to such a loss. However, at this moment, it is my duty as a family member to stand by you and offer my sincere support.
Earlier, the actor expressed his condolences to the families of the victims of the accident and wrote on social media, “My heart is broken; I am in unbearable, indescribable pain and grief. I express my deepest condolences to the families of my dear brothers and sisters who lost their lives. I wish a speedy recovery to those undergoing treatment in the hospital.”
Vijay was the main speaker at that public meeting. It is learnt that he was making several remarks about former DMK minister Senthil Balaji at that meeting. Suddenly, there was a commotion among the audience present at that time. Vijay stopped his speech midway. According to various eyewitnesses, there was a rush among the crowd to touch the actor.
According to Indian media reports, the public meeting was very crowded. The organizers did not expect so many people to gather. The crowd gradually increased as Vijay got up to give a speech. As a result, there was a commotion among the people. While trying to handle the situation, some party workers fell ill. Some children lost consciousness. The sick were quickly rescued and put in ambulances and sent to the hospital.
