Marvel has locked in the release date for its next big Avengers film — Avengers: Doomsday will hit theatres worldwide on December 18, 2026. Anthony and Joe Russo are directing, the same pair behind Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.
What’s got fans talking most is the casting. Robert Downey Jr. is returning to the MCU, but not as Iron Man this time — he’s playing the villain Doctor Doom. He’s joined by a huge returning cast, including Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Anthony Mackie, Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, and Paul Rudd. Adding to the scale of it all, the movie brings together heroes from the Avengers, the Fantastic Four and the X-Men in one story.
The plot is pretty vague, too, but the official explanation is that heroes from three different universes are brought into a situation where they must come into conflict with something they’re never faced before. The studio is not calling it a “sequel” to Doomsday, though, but rather a “reset” of the franchise — a fresh start — in the mold of that special kind of sequel.
In the background, shooting was being done in Pinewood Studios in England from April until September 2025, and the first trailer was released this week, allowing fans to get a first-hand look at Doctor Doom in Downey’s hands. The movie will also pave the way for its sequel, Avengers: Secret Wars, which will premiere on December 17, 2027.
Given the scale of the cast and effects involved, this is expected to be one of the costliest productions Marvel has ever put together — though exact budget figures haven’t been officially confirmed by the studio. With the trailer out and the date locked, all eyes are now on how the story comes together over the next few months.
