Sultan is about a wrestler named Sultan and his journey. At its heart, it’s a love story between Sultan and his trainer Aarfa. But it also has lots of wrestling action starring Salman Khan.

The movie shows Sultan rising to fame in the wrestling world. But like most sports movies, Sultan isn’t perfect. There were some parts that didn’t feel realistic. You can read more details and analysis in the full article.
Cast: Salman Khan, Anushka Sharma, Randeep Hooda, Amit Sadh.

Sultan: Movie Story

Sultan is about this guy from Haryana named Sultan Ali Khan, played by Salman Khan. He falls for this girl Aarfa, played by Anushka Sharma, who has dreams of winning Olympic gold for wrestling. But she’s not interested in Sultan because she wants to focus on her goal.

This motivates Sultan to learn wrestling too. He goes to Aarfa’s dad, who trains wrestlers, and promises to win the state championship if he’ll teach him. Sultan starts off rough but works his butt off in training. Pretty soon he’s unstoppable and reaches the top of his game.

But then everything good in his life falls apart and he goes down a dark path. A few years later though, this guy Aakash, played by Amit Sadh, approaches him about entering an MMA tournament. Sultan gets in shape with a new trainer, played by Randeep Hooda. He decides to do the tournament as a way to regain his former glory.

Sultan Movie Review

The trailer for Sultan gave a pretty good sense of what the movie was about – a love story, though that part may have come as a surprise. The plot itself didn’t bring anything really new or original to the sports drama genre.
As a Bollywood fan, you probably had a good idea of how the second half was going to play out even before the interval. The big question is whether the execution and performances were engaging enough to overlook the predictable script.

Personally, I’m not the biggest fan of movies that take creative liberties without limit or come up with totally over-the-top unrealistic stories. Sultan’s story wasn’t outrageously out there, it just felt a bit too dramatic and melodramatic at times.

There was one point where Aarfa’s love story created an obstacle for her career that really reminded me of Mary Kom. So in many ways it relied on pretty classic, dated elements of the sports drama formula.

The dialog was written very much with Salman Khan’s persona in mind. Unfortunately, none of the lines really stood out as memorable as something like the iconic “Sattar minute” speech from Chak De India.

Sultan’s character arc was interesting, showing him evolving from immature to focused to broken down as life throws challenges at him. So the first half was entertaining thanks to Salman’s physique and dance moves. But the second half dragged a bit more with the emotional drama.

That extra melodrama in the second half seemed a tad unnecessary. But then again, those are the hallmarks of a typical Yash Raj Films production.

Sultan Movie Star Performance

Salman Khan really put in the work to get that body at 50. The dude was wrestling, dancing, romancing and acting with total ease in Sultan – his fans are going to love it. You can really see his character go through such a big change, and he nails it. Dude’s a total scene-stealer in this movie.

Anushka Sharma really holds her own to support Salman’s character. Her performance is pretty good and surprisingly, the chemistry with Salman works too.

Amit Sadh and Randeep Hooda have cameo roles and they fit right in. Only thing is, wish we could have seen a bit more of Randeep!

The supporting role of Govind is played amazingly by Anant Sharma. The dude totally owned that part.
Direction, Music This new movie from Ali Abbas Zafar is gonna be huge! Salman Khan fans are gonna love it.

Zafar really captured the spirit of wrestling in small towns across India. Just like Maneesh Sharma in his movies, Zafar shows what life is like in those smaller cities.

Even if the story isn’t perfect, Salman Khan carries this movie for sure. Remember Zafar’s earlier films? Dude has come a long way.

It’s not a bad movie by any means, but it could have been even better. The second half does drag in places, and some of the fight scenes don’t keep you on the edge of your seat like they could. Also, that martial arts tournament could have been executed a little smoother.

The music is really catchy though. Some songs really stick with you.

Final Word

Sultan isn’t really a sports drama like they claimed. It’s more of just a Salman Khan show. Don’t get me wrong, it was entertaining enough and the plot was pretty predictable but I still enjoyed watching it. I mean, it’s Salman Khan, you know you’re gonna have a good time. All things considered, I’d give it a solid 3 out of 5. It did the job – I was never bored and Salman did his thing. Could it have been better? Sure, but for what it was, I’d say it was worth the watch.
